Bouquet of Memories
Victoria International Airport
Victoria, BC, 2006
Bouquet of Memories at the Victoria International Airport is a conceptual bouquet of flowers celebrating the memories created as travellers begin or finish a journey. It symbolizes the tenacity of nature to overcome human imposition. This piece was inspired by my youthful impressions as an air cadet noting poppies growing through a thick concrete runway at a mothballed air force base. The second inspiration was the sight of bands of Monarch butterflies migrating north through the Mojave Desert.
The sketches were generated in the initial design phase of “Bouquet of Memories”.
I am open to all ideas in an effort to illustrate possibilities which best reflect the ‘thread of an idea’. The thrust of this potent idea is a sketch which captures a line of “Gesture” which will define the character of the proposed work. Maintaining the integrity of “The Gesture” through the entirety of fabrication and installation becomes the challenge of the production.
