Tom Thomson’s Canoe
Toronto, Ontario, 2001
In 2000, a client paging through my sketchbook noted images of canoes and docks. At that time my sculptural practice was focused on these Canadian icons.
That focus was influenced by my fascination with Tom Thomson, de facto member of Canada’s Group of Seven. “Tom Thomson’s Canoe” depicts the tragic death of Thomson by mysterious circumstances in his canoe on a lake in Algonquin Park in 1917.
The canoe and reeds are made of marine grade aluminum.
